The Blazer tennis team went to Braden River to take on the Pirates in the 8th match of the season. The Blazers came in having lost their last two, and looked to stop the struggles Monday afternoon. Things started poorly as 1 seed
Isaiah Ledford got sent down 1-4/2-4, putting the Blazers down 1-0. This was quickly followed by
Donovan Beita and
Trenton Byers losing as well, putting the Pirates up 3-0, and one win away from a victory.
Ira Jackson and
Alex Negron kept hope alive for the Blazers, winning their single matches, and bringing the Blazers within one going into the doubles matches. The second doubles team,
Holden Schlabach and
Noah Luna getting beat without putting up much of a struggle.
The top doubles team,
Donovan Beita and
Isaiah Ledford, continued fighting hard. After dropping the first set 3-5, the Blazers duo were down 0-3 in the second set. Trailing love-40 in the 4th game of the set, Beita and Ledford fought their way back to taking the game. Eventually, they pushed the second set to a tiebreak, with a score of 4-4. In the tiebreak, the Blazers won 7-4, meaning a ten point tiebreak would decide the doubles match. Despite starting off trailing 2-6, the Blazers fought their way back to a 10-7 win in the tiebreak, giving them a win for the match. Unfortunately, the Blazers still only won 3 matches, meaning the Pirates walked away with a 4-3 win, and the Blazers fell to 4-4 on the season, with a three game losing steak. Still, the Blazers showed improvement from last year, where they went down 0-7 to the Pirates. The Blazers have a quick turnaround, taking on the Booker Tornadoes Tuesday afternoon. The Blazers played them twice last year, walking away with a win in both matchups.
