The Blazers girls soccer program travelled to Admiral Farragut Academy on Thursday afternoon for the 11th matchup between the two schools. SCS came into the game with an 8-1-1 record against the Bluejackets, having won the last three matches.
Three minutes into the game, Blazers Junior
Haley Bolton won a ball just inside the BlueJackets half of the field and dribbled towards the goal. Bolton beat the defender and blasted a shot past the goalie and into the net to put the Blazers up 1-0 early. The BlueJackets would counter strike, but would be denied as Blazer Freshman goalie
Brooklyn Loftus kept the net empty. Around the seven minute mark, the Blazers would strike a second time after forcing a corner kick. Senior Liv McCoy would take the corner and drive the ball perfectly towards the middle of the penalty box and right to the waiting feet of Senior
Alison Smith, who would drive the ball into the corner of the goal. Again, the BlueJackets would counter strike, including winning two corners of their own, before the Blazers defense denied them a shot on the goal and pushed the ball back to the other side of the field. Both teams would go scoreless for the next 25 minutes until
Ryan Donlin would take the ball off a BlueJacket defenders foot, take one touch, and place the ball into the back of the net with a great left footed strike to push the Blazer lead to 3-0 going into the half. The score would stay at 3-0 for the majority of the second half until the Blazers would strike a fourth time as McCoy would get a goal to go with her earlier assist after a pass sailed past the defense and Liv won the race to the ball. Liv's first touch would push the ball past the goalie and off the post and she'd get to the ball before the nearest defender and knock it into the back of the goal to go up 4-0. Admiral Farragut would add a goal of their own on a nice shot from just outside the penalty box that just got past Loftus' hands to break the shutout. That's how the game would end. Loftus earned her first high school win in the goal, making 15 saves on the night. The Blazers spread the ball around with goals from Bolton, Smith, Donlin, and McCoy, all being their first of the early season.
Coach Armand Dikranian was pleased with the Blazers performance, "I thought that overall we had a really good performance. The girls gave a ton of effort while also staying committed to our pregame keys. Very happy with the entire group tonight". The win marks Dikranian's first as the program's head coach.
With the win, the Blazers moved to 1-1 on the season and will host the Kings of Southwest Florida Christian Academy in their home opener on Monday at 5pm. SFCA is coming off of a season opening loss to Babcock Ranch 4-3 and will battle it out on Friday against Seacrest Country Day before heading up north to meet us on Monday.
