Female Scholar Athlete Torch Award - Alison Smith

To excel in the classroom with a full course load of AP classes while playing three sports takes an exceptional person. Ali does all of this with humility and grace.

  • From Greta Otto, "Ali shows an exceptional ability to foster teamwork, inspire peers, facilitate constructive discussions & help create an environment of collective learning and growth. She's also ready with a chemistry joke or Disney sing-along to brighten any boring AP Chem lecture!"

  • From Michael Tedder, "Ali always puts others before herself, whether it's on the court or in the classroom. Throughout the season, we saw this time and time again, the selflessness and caring for others. During the tennis season, she hurt her right forehand/wrist and instead of not showing up, she was at every practice and almost every match cheering her teammates on, offering words of encouragement in times of adversity. She also demonstrated her leadership skills and helped several of her teammates with their school work and helped improve their grades, so they could maintain their eligibility. When it comes to academics, Alison took 4 AP and additional honors courses and she was diligent in each of those classes and always put her best effort regardless of the difficulty in the subject. I consider it a privilege to have been her coach over the years because you can always count on "Ali" to challenge every point and will never back down or quit."
