The Blazer girls soccer program will start out the 2025-26 season at 1-0 after a 4-2 win over the Blue Jackets of Admiral Farragut Academy. Both teams started out strong on the defensive side of the ball, not allowing a serious look at the goal until nearly fifteen minutes into the game. The first goal came as Blazer Senior
Haley Bolton broke into the penalty box and was taken down with a slide tackle from behind, earning her a penalty kick. Bolton calmly placed the ball into the left corner of the net, just outside the reach of the Blue Jackets goalie and into the net for goal number one of the season. The defenses went back to work, both teams holding for another twenty-five minutes before
Brooklyn Loftus was bodied off of the ball inside the penalty box as well, earning the Blazers their second penalty kick of the season. Loftus looked towards her goalie to take the shot and Brooklynn Mruczek came out of the net for the attempt. Mruczek drilled a hard shot into the upper half of the net, just outside the reach of the opposing goalkeeper for her first career goal at SCS and the second goal of the game. The score would remain 2-0 until right before the end of the first half when the Blazers defense failed to clear a ball out and the Blue Jackets were able to find the corner of the net to make it 2-1 going into he second half. The second half began with nine minutes of back-and-forth play between the teams before Mruczek, now playing in the field, would find an open
Reagan Volkert behind the defense to make it 3-1. Volkert would take one touch before finding the corner of the net for her first career goal as a Blazer. Volkert would net her second of the game after Mruczek had a defender slide in between her and the ball and knock the ball away, right to Volkert, who popped the ball up and over the Blue Jackets goalkeeper to make it 4-1. The Blue Jackets would score one more before the final whistle was blown, but it wouldn't be enough as the Blazer defense held strong throughout the rest of the second half.
Both
Brooklyn Loftus and Brooklynn Mruczek spent time in the goal for the Blazers, earning 8 and 4 saves respectively to split the victory in goal.
Armand Dikranian had this to say about the game, "The challenge in preseason was to reestablish the commitment and heart from last year and make our moves forward. We lost a lot of seniors, but a ton of credit to our new senior class for stepping into their own leadership roles so well. A great win to the girls."
The Blazers will now prepare for a battle with the Tornadoes of Booker HS next Tuesday as they travel across town for a 6pm start time.
