Blazer Girls Soccer Falls in WCAC Finals in Penalty Kicks

The WCAC Girls Championship was a game to behold as the Blazers battled against Classical Academy of Sarasota for the right to be crowned WCAC Champions for the 2025-26 season. With the reigning WCAC Champions, Lakewood Ranch Prep losing in the semi-finals to Classical Academy, the game would crown a first time winner of the WCAC Championship this year. Both teams played outstanding on offense and defense, both having a great number of plays that looked like goals might have been coming, but then the defense would turn back the ball and deny the goal. At the end of 90 minutes, the score remained 0-0 and would go to a penalty shootout. The Blazers would shift Selah Spenn into the goal for the penalty kicks and she'd be called upon first to defend as the Patriots would shoot first. Spenn would guess correctly on shot number one, but didn't need to make a save as the Patriot kick would go above the top bar, giving the Blazers advantage. Junior Ryan Donlin would take the first PK for the Blazers. Donlin took the ball and aimed for the corner of the goal, but was just outside the edge of the post and the score remained 0-0 after 1 round of PK's. On shot attempt number two for the Patriots, Spenn would guess wrong and the ball went flying past her in the other direction, giving the Patriots the 1-0 lead. Spenn would then take kick number two for the Blazers and her shot was turned back by the Patriot goalkeeper to preserve the 1-0 lead. TCA's third kicker would take the ball and place it just outside of Spenn's reach and into the corner of the net to make it 2-0. Haley Bolton was up next for the Blazers and she'd strike the ball hard and to the side of the goalkeeper, but it would be too hard of a shot for the Patriot goalkeeper to handle and it bounced off her hands and into the net to make it 2-1. The Patriots fourth kicker would put the ball into the upper third of the net above Spenn to make it 3-1 and force the Blazers into a sudden death situation. Gabi Dasilva would come through with a goal to push the shootout into the fifth round, firing the ball past the goalkeeper and into the corner of the goal. Spenn guessed correctly, but didn't have the bounce off the turf to get her to the corner of the goal as the ball squirted past and sealed the game for the Patriots.

The Blazers (6-2-1) will look to bounce back this upcoming weekend as they travel to Keswick Christian School in St. Petersburg to battle against the Crusaders (2-6-1).
