Blazer Basketball came through with their first season sweep of Out-of-Door Academy since the 2012-13 season when both the varsity girls and boys swept the Thunder. Earlier in the year the Blazer girls (58-50) and boys (60-52) won at ODA, while the Blazers also took the wins at home Friday evening (55-21 & 61-58). To make it a clean sweep, the JV boys team also took both match-ups (58-51 & 79-34).
In the Varsity Girls game, the teams would come out to a quick 4-4 tie before the Blazers went on a 14-0 run to end the first quarter with a score of 18-4. The Blazers would increase their lead to 20 going into halftime as they'd outscore the Thunder 13-7 in the second. To start the third, the Blazers would come out on a 19-0 run, en route to a 50-14 lead that put the game out of reach. The Thunder would win the fourth quarter 7-5, but it wasn't enough to make a dent in the Blazer lead as the Blazers took the season sweep with a score of 55-21. The Blazers were led by the Blazers first triple-double of the season, coming from Senior Brenda Bresciani as she scored 13 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and stealing the ball 11 times. Nikki Olupitan added a team high 20 points and Octavia Stoller added 6.
The win moves the Blazer Girls to 9-4 on the season as they will head into next week's match-up with Community Christian at home on Tuesday at 4:30pm. The Blazers will look to use the game to provide momentum as they travel to Winter Haven next weekend for the Sunshine State Athletic Association's 5A Championship Bracket. The Blazers are the #1 seed in the bracket and will play against Morningside Academy at 11:30am on Friday. The winner will advance to Saturday's 5A Championship against the winner of #2 First Baptist Palm Coast and #3 Indian Rocks Christian at noon.
