Girls Soccer Falls in District Match-up to the Patriots

The Blazers Girls Soccer team's season came to an end on Thursday as they fell in penalty kicks to Classical Academy of Sarasota.

The Patriots scored the first three goals in the thirty-fifth, thirty-eighth, and fifty-sixth minutes, but the Blazers didn't give up and battled back, scoring two goals almost immediately after the third Patriot goal. Less than a minute after the third goal, the Blazers Selah Spenn took a throw in and the ball bounced the Blazers way as it landed at the eet of Reagan Miller. Miller punched the ball ahead towards the goal and Reagan Volkert (10) won the race with the defender and goalkeeper to the ball, just getting enough on the ball to send it into the goal to make it 3-1 Patriots. Two minutes later, Spenn (9) took a free kick from just outside the penalty box and floated it perfectly over the outstretched arms of the Patriots goalkeeper and into the goal to climb to within one at 3-2. The teams would battle back and forth for the next twelve minutes until the Blazers struck a third time in the second half, drawing the game to a tie at 3-3. Senior Haley Bolton would get the play moving as she took possession of the ball and pushed past the outside Patriot defender. Bolton sent a cross right in front of the goal and the speedy Volkert (11) won the fight for the ball and unleashed a shot that flew past the goalkeeper and into the goal to tie the game. Both teams battled back and forth through the end of the second half and neither could score, sending the match into a overtime. In FHSAA overtime, two 10-minute periods are played to determine a winner. Both defenses held the entirety of the 20 minute overtime, resulting in the match being sent to penalty kicks. The match marked the second time this season that the Blazers went to PK's in a match. In penalty's, Selah Spenn would get things started and deliver on a high shot that snuck in just below the cross bar to make it 1-0 Blazers. Brooklyn Loftus took to the goal for the Blazers. In kick number one, Loftus guessed correctly, but the ball was struck too well and Loftus was unable to push it back as it glanced off her hands and into the corner of the goal. 1-1. Haley Bolton took kick number two for the Blazers and the Patriot goalkeeper guessed correctly, sending the ball off to the left of the goal to keep it at 1-1. In the Patriots second kick, Loftus guessed incorrectly and the Patriots went up 2-1. Kicking third for the Blazers was Cameron Lundquist. Lundquist went to the right and the Patriot goalkeeper just got a hand on the ball, directing it into the side post and denying the goal. The next kick for the Patriots went high, missing the goal and keeping the score at 2-1. Reagan Miller took the fourth kick for the Blazers, directing it to the right side of the goal. It nearly snuck in the goal as the Patriot goalkeeper guessed incorrectly, but again she was just able to get an arm on the ball and deny the score. In attempt number four for the Patriots, Loftus again guessed correctly, but was unable to push it out of the goal, making the final score 3-3 (3-1 Penaltys) in favor of the Patriots.
