The B team had an awesome season with 14 girls from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. By the end of the season almost every girl was able to overhand serve! We worked hard on ball control, getting three touches on the ball before sending the ball over the net. Setting and spiking was much improved by each player by the end of the season. It was fun to see girls going all out, running after balls, hitting the floor, and playing like a team! In practice we worked on skills like footwork, arm swing, communication, diving, and putting the ball deep in the court. It was awesome to watch players use these skills on the court every game! The team was full of hard working girls who also supported each other which was evident in their sportsmanship on and off the court.
For the A team, we were amazed at the progress that was made on the volleyball court both in terms of knowledge of the game as well as fundamental physical skills put into practice. The rotations that we put in place at the beginning of the season to get players into their appropriate positions were all brand new to the players and it came with many challenges and mix-ups. I remember one game early on where Bralyn (a libero) played a point in the front row - whoops! I also remember yelling constantly in the first few games to get girls into their positions during the points. But, as the season progressed the girls were telling me where they should be when I wasn't sure! Very proud of this new knowledge of the game. We also got the opportunity to work with the girls on other aspects of game knowledge such as trying to hit the ball to the other teams' setter to take them out of system, blocking the other team's attacks, setting the ball to our outside hitter when we had an out of system ball, and taking the first ball away from our setter during a freeball. These strategies were all new to the girls as well and it was a lot of fun to get to see them putting them to use in games. Finally, we spent a lot of time working on the physical fundamentals of the game - serving (+footwork), setting (+footwork/leg use), passing, hitting (+footwork), blocking (+footwork), and other things like diving technique and digging balls off the net. It was awesome to see a couple of balls passed straight up in the air perfectly after ricocheting off the net in the last game as well as many diving plays during that game. Just went to show that these girls were very receptive to our coaching and used all of the tools they were given in practice to improve their gameplay. Ultimately, we went 6-2 on the season granting us 2nd place in the tournament seeding. We won our first playoff game (2-0) against the number 7 seeded Out of Door Academy at home, and then lost the next playoff game (0-2) against the number 4 seeded Babcock at Saint Stephen's.
As coaches we are extremely proud of the girls and all they had accomplished on the season. We had a great time coaching them this season and hope to see the players continue their volleyball careers in the future!
