The varsity boys basketball team came out strong against the Foundation Christian Lancers, but couldn't put them away as the Lancers made some key changes defensively to eliminate Blazer open shots. The Lancers length became a huge factor as they controlled the boards and used that length to force the Blazers to shoot over them. The first quarter was a tight back and forth between the teams as one team would score, just for the other team to match them on the scoreboard. The Blazers held a slight lead at 18-15 going into the second quarter. The second quarter looked to be much of the same as the teams were even at 24-24 midway through the quarter. The Blazers would score on their next three possessions to start pulling away from the Lancers before the half.
Ben Milliken started it off by stealing a pass and laying it up into the basket, and then following it up with a short jumper to go up by four. Josh Frazini would then take the ball on the next possession and match Milliken's short jumper with one of his own. With around a minute to go, the Blazers would push the lead out another five, points after
Matthias Hulka drained a three pointer from the top of the arc and Frazzini picked off a pass for two easy points at the other end. This closed out the half for the Blazers as they went into the locker room at 35-26. The Lancers then made some key defensive changes to use their length to affect the shooting of the Blazers and completely shut down the Blazers during the second half. The Blazers made just two baskets and two free throws during the third quarter, but still held a 43-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The lid on the basket didn't open up as the Blazers hit just one basket, with 13 seconds to go in the game. The game ended up in the Lancers favor at 52-46. The Blazers were led by
Josh Frazzini with 16 points, 4 steals, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists, while
Ben Milliken put in 14 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and had 3 steals.
Randall Collins led the team in rebounds with 8 in the game.
The Blazers will be in action Thursday evening at Bradenton Christian against a strong 9-2 Panther team. The JV boys begin at 4pm, with the varsity girls playing afterwards around 5:30pm, and the evening finishing up with the varsity boys around 7pm.
