SCS Defeats Community Christian in Close Game

On Tuesday night, the Blazers Boys Basketball team played the Community Christian Crusaders. The Crusaders made the trip from Bradenton to come play the Blazers. The Blazers would come out shooting well from beyond the arc as they sank 3 three pointers during the first quarter. With the game tied at 13 and only a few seconds left, Justin Brock would release a shot from midcourt that missed left of the basket, but Jayven Szewczyk would tip the ball back up and in for a buzzer beater and give the Blazers a 2 point lead headed into the second quarter. Randall Collins would have a big second quarter as he dropped in 7 of the Blazers 12 points in the quarter. The Blazers found another buzzer beat as Simon Dik followed up a late miss with a tip in to close out the first half down by 1. A locker room speech by Coach Kevin Bruinsma gave the Blazers the fire they needed coming out of halftime. Ben Milliken and Szewczyk would combine for 9 points in the third quarter as the Blazers took a narrow 1 point lead going into the fourth quarter. The Blazers would come out on fire in the fourth quarter as Milliken would hit two three pointers and Collins would add four points to push the lead out to 8 points at 50-42. The Crusaders would come back to within 2 points on a three pointer with 4.6 seconds to go in the game, but Milliken would put the game out of reach with two free throws after a foul on the following inbounds pass that put him on the line. The Blazers would get the 4 point win by a score of 59-55. The victory insures a winning season for the Blazers, the teams fourth in a row. The loss dropped CCS to 14-7 on the season. Team leader in points per game, Ben Milliken, led the team with 22 points. Jayven Szewczyk and Randall Collins each had 14 points in the win. Szewczyk would pull down 8 rebounds and hand out 5 assists, while Milliken just missed a double-double with 9 rebounds.

The Blazers got a lot of coverage in the Herald Tribune this week as they posted recaps fo the games and Jayven Szewczyk was nominated as a player of the week last week following his 24 points vs TCA, click here to vote for Jayven. The Blazers will close out the season at home on Friday against ODA at 7pm. They will then enter the FHSAA District Tournament as the three seed and host TCA on Tuesday at 7pm at home.
