This weekend the Blazers Baseball team will head to Sanford, Florida, for the Sunshine State Athletic Association's 4A Championships. Friday nights game against Trinity Christian Academy will begin at 7pm. Trinity Christian is 8-6, while the Blazers are 7-7 on the season. With no common opponents, its hard to gauge how the game will play out, but the Blazers always have a good chance at winning.
Randall Collins (4-2) is expected to start for the Blazers with the goal being to quiet the Eagles bats for a few innings and obtain an early lead. Collins has 46 strikeouts in 29 innings pitched, while giving up just 6 earned runs to produce a 1.45 earned run average. The Blazers are likely to turn to Freshman
Evan Poznanski (0-0) to relieve Collins. Poznanski has pitched 10.1 innings in relief this season, giving up just 2 runs (1.35 ERA) and striking out 16 batters. The Eagles will hand the ball off to a trio of sophomores, Reilley Oglageo (4-1, 13 IP, 3.23 ERA), Elijah Bagg (1-1, 26.2 IP, 1.58 ERA) or Alex Low (2-0,14 IP 0.00 ERA), all have been strong for the Eagles this year with over 20 strikeouts each. Both teams like to run a lot, with the Blazers swiping 61 bases and the Eagles taking 58 over the season. The Blazers hold a slight advantage defensively as the Eagles defense has given up 39 free bases this season, while the Blazers have only committed 24 errors. At the plate, the Blazers will look towards the strong bats of
Alex Hefti,
Justin Brock, Collins, and Poznanski.
The winner goes on to face the winner of the 4pm game, Hernando Christian (9-7) vs Cambridge Christian (8-10). The Blazers have faced the Lancers from Cambridge Christian twice this season and been on the losing end both times, with the most recent being the 1-0 thriller a week ago. The Lancers and Lions played to start the season with Hernando Christian winning the game 8-4. Hernando is coming into the game on a four game winning streak, while Cambridge is coming in off an 8-4 win against Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate Prep. The loser will play in the consolation game. Both games will be on Saturday and all four games will happen at Historic Sanford Stadiums back field.
