On Friday evening the Blazer Boys Basketball team hosted Keswick Christian at SCS for the Class 1A District 11 Championship. The Blazers started out slow as the Crusaders came out to an 11 point lead at 13-4 lead near the halfway mark of the first quarter. But the Blazers battled right back to make it a one point game before the end of the first. It began with a basket from
Justin Brock, driving down the lane and weaving through the defense to get the scoring started. After the Crusaders would get another basket of their own,
Travis Miller would set up
Drew Sirianni in the corner for a three and then Sirianni would take another pass in the corner and drive along the baseline before dropping a floater into the basket, smoothly sinking the and one free throw after being fouled to make it 15-12 Crusaders. The Blazers would pull within one at 18-17 at the close of the quarter as Brock dropped in a last second jumper from the top of the key. The teams would battle back-and-forth in the second quarter until the Blazers took the lead near the end for the last time and then finishing with another beat of the buzzer as
Drew Sirianni would make it a three point game at 29-26 going into halftime. During halftime, Wyatt Spenn would keep the crowd roaring as he showed off his skill with the Chinese Yo-yo, also known as the Diabolo, tossing it nearly to the ceiling of the gymnasium and catching it again. The second half proved to be one of the roughest the Blazers have played in, but the Blazers were able to build their lead up to eleven at 39-28 near the middle of the third period. But the Crusaders fought back, bringing it back to within five shortly before the end of the quarter at 41-36. The Blazers would again increase the lead to eleven at 47-36, but couldn't keep the Crusaders down and they brought it back to within three with just over a minute to go. Keswick would set up for a last possession starting with 14.3 seconds to go, but couldn't get the ball to fall through the basket, fouling
Noah Spenn intentionally after he rebounded the ball to put him on the line. Spenn would hit the first of two free throws to push the lead out to 4 points and all but seal the game as the blazers would retain possession of the ball. The game would end at 54-49 after
Ben Milliken would also drain a free throw before the final buzzer went off. The Blazers were led by Spenn with 16 points, while Sirianni and Brock both added 12 and Milliken dropped 10
The Championship marked the first for the Blazers since the 2016-17 season, in which the Blazers knocked off Saint Stephen's in the semi final before defeating Out-of-Door Academy in the Championship to take home the trophy. The Blazers will now wait in anticipation for the FHSAA to release the Regional pairings as they will either host All Saints' Academy as the four seed or travel to All Saints' as the five seed, with the game scheduled to be next Saturday night at 7pm.
