The Athlete of the Year Award is given annually to a male and female senior. These athletes display dominance in their sport and often in multiple sports. They set a high standard for commitment and work ethic. They are great competitors who are striving to get better and pushing their teammates to do the same. These seniors have demonstrated athletic excellence on the fields and courts of Sarasota Christian School.
This year's male athlete of the year was a captain in two sports for the Blazers this year. He started out his senior year with an injury, but through perseverance and hard work, he came back quickly and stepped back into his leadership role on the basketball team. In both of the sports that this Blazer played in, he didn't have the most points, runs, hits, or rebounds. Instead, he was tasked with doing the "little" things. The things that, when added up, end up being big things on winning teams. In basketball, he handles the ball and orchestrates the offense, creating scoring opportunities for his teammates. He had a team and career high in assists this year with 67, while also setting a career high in points with 130.Â
- From Coach Bru, "After a Junior year season ending injury, Maison came back as a senior captain and our starting point guard. Maison led the team in assists and steals, while most nights guarding the other team's best player. He developed a very steady confidence as the season went along and was truly playing his best basketball at the end of the season."Â
In baseball, he worked the count and found ways to move the runners to the next base, whether it was through laying down bunts, getting hit and drawing walks, or by finding a way to put the ball in play. This student-athlete had an on base percentage of .387, just under the team average. In the outfield, he caught everything that was hit at him, and quite a few that weren't. Â
- From Coach Bo, "Maison will go down as one of the most explosive athletes in SCS history. His quick twitch style of quickness and power was unmatched. Even after adversity hit, Maison pushed through tough times to get back that athleticism. Watching his dedication to the craft and his journey these four years has been a joy. Thanks for letting me coach you."
After 7 seasons of basketball and baseball, we are proud to say that
Maison Montgomery is our 2022-23 Male Athlete of the Year.
