Blazer Baseball Wins Home Opener vs Lions

On Thursday evening, the Blazers held their home opener against the Gulf Coast HEAT for their second match-up against the Lions this season. Both teams pitchers came out pitching well, both surrendering a run in the first inning before settling in. The Lions would push another two runs across in the third inning on a walk and two singles to take their first lead of the game at 3-1. The Blazers would turn to Freshman Bronson Hoke on the mound to finish the inning and he'd strikeout the first nine batters he'd face, totalling 13 strikeouts in 16 plate appearances by the Lions. The Blazers would get a run in the fifth inning to pull within 1 at 3-2, then they'd break through for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 6-3. Rowan Baum and Evan Poznanski would get the inning started with walks and Will Papineau would reach on an error by the Lions third basemen, loading the bases for Sophomore James White. White would reach on an error by the left fielder, resulting in the Blazers scoring a pair of runs on the play and runners at second and third with nobody out. Hayden Rogers would put the ball into play and bring in the fifth run for the Blazers as he grounded out to the shortstop and Isaiah Miller would add another insurance run on a sacrifice fly to score White and push the lead to 3 at 6-3 going into the seventh inning. Bronson Hoke would walk the leadoff batter in the seventh before striking out the next two and catching a bunted ball in the air to close the door, securing his first win as a Blazer.

The Blazer bats were held quiet, resulting in just three hits in the game, but the Blazers were able to work towards eleven walks, giving them the opportunity to take the game late. On the mound, Hayden Rogers recorded 3 strikeouts in two innings pitched, while Bronson Hoke recorded 13 strikeouts over five innings pitched, not surrendering a hit to the Lions. The Blazers were perfect in the field for the evening.

The Blazers will take the field on Friday night against Sarasota Military Academy at home at 7pm as the Blazers battle the Eagles and try to stay undefeated on the season.
