Blazer Baseball hosted Babcock Ranch HS on Monday evening for FHSAA 1A District 11 quarterfinal competition.
Rowan Baum started on the mound and pitched a phenomenal game, pitching the complete game shutout with seven strikeouts, allowing only seven Babcock hitters to reach base. The Blazers would gain three runs in the first inning with two outs and those runs would stand as the game winners. After a
Justin Brock walk and two outs,
Collin Lawson would torch a ball over the centerfielder, one hopping the fence and driving in Brock to take the 1-0 lead at the time.
James White would then come up with Lawson on second and drive a hard single through the middle to score Lawson. After White advanced to second on a wild pitch,
Rowan Baum would reach on an error as the throw from third base was too much for the Trailblazer first baseman to handle. White would score the third run as the ball bounced away from the first baseman. That would be the score for the majority of the game as neither team would score again until the Blazers fifth inning when
Will Papineau would reach on an error by the pitcher and steal second, bringing up Lawson. Lawson would single to center and bring in Papineau to go up 4-0. The Blazers would then get five more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Baum tripled to right field, setting up
Jace Mayer for a sacrifice fly ball to center field that brought in Baum. Then,
Isaiah Miller found his way deep into the count and worked a walk, and
Hayden Rogers moved him to second after being hit by pitch, and Brock would work the count and find himself on first base as well due to the walk, loading the bases for hot hitting
Evan Poznanski. Poznanski would come through with a two run single to center field, leaving runners at the corners. Lawson would come through with his third two out RBI hit of the evening, driving the ball to center field for another single that drove in the final two runs for the Blazers, pushing the final score to 9-0. Baum would come back on the mound for the seventh and calmly strike out the first two batters before fielding a grounder back up the middle and tossing the ball to first to end the game.
The Blazers will head to Canterbury Fort Myers on Tuesday evening for a battle with the number five team in all of baseball in the state. Canterbury is 19-3 on the season and will be a tough foe. The Cougars ended the Blazers tournament hopes last season as the #23 ranked team in the state and went on to win the 1A State Title. The Blazers, ranked #382 in the state last year, held their own against the eventual state champions, but came up short as they fell by a score of 5-2.
